Chargers Held Winless Over Weekend to Start Run of Spring Break Games

The Carl Sandburg College baseball team racked up runs but didn’t come away with any wins during its weekend slate of games in southern Illinois against some stiff competition.
The Chargers lost 10-8 to Kankakee on Friday, 14-4 to Parkland on Saturday and 19-14 to John A. Logan on Sunday as they kicked off a stretch of six straight days of games during spring break.
Kankakee received votes in the latest NJCAA Division II rankings, and Parkland is ranked 20th. John A. Logan is ranked ninth in Division I.

Key Moment
The Chargers struck for five runs in the seventh to take their first lead of the game, but the Cavaliers regained the lead with a three-run bottom of the eighth. A base hit tied the game, and a two-out, two-run triple proved to be the difference.

Sophomore Noah Hoepfner (East Moline, Ill./United Township) went 4 for 5 with two doubles, a run, two RBIs and a stolen base.

Israel was the lone Charger with multiple hits, going 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIs. He delivered RBI singles in the first and fourth.

Sandburg led 11-6 after its half of the fourth before the Volunteers chipped away, scoring twice in both the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Jason Hodges’ two-run homer in the sixth delivered the go-ahead run for Logan.

Darst connected for a two-run shot in the eighth for his third homer on the season. He finished 2 for 5 with a home run, double, two runs, three RBIs and a stolen base.
